Super Full Moon Hike on Volcan Mountain, Saturday, August 9th 7pm
Saturday, August 9th join San Diego County Park Attendant Bill Augustus for a sunset hike on scenic Volcan Mountain. Take in the panoramic views while hiking the Five Oaks trail. Enjoy a bird’s eye view of Julian, where on a clear day you can see the buildings in downtown San Diego and Islands off the coast of Mexico and Southern California. Learn about the history and geography of the area. From the summit you can enjoy an incredible view of San Felipe Valley and the desert. We will arrive at the summit just before sunset to enjoy the coastal view as the sun sets. We will hike down the mountain during a Super Full Moon.
This hike will in clude an elevation gain of approximately 1,000 ft in 2 miles. Please dress in layers as the temperature can change dramatically as we reach the summit. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and carry plenty of water. Bring a snack for the summit. Bring a flashlight or headlamp and a walking stick for the hike down the mountain in the moon light.
Meet at 7PM and park along the side of the road near the sign for the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve (1209 Farmer Road, Julian, CA 92036), just north of the Wynola Road/Farmer Road intersection. Continue up to the Hubbell Gateway located approximately 300 feet up the gravel road from the parking area on Farmers Road. This hike will be canceled if it rains.
